Frequently Asked Questions

What should a timesheet template include?

At minimum: employee name, employer name, pay period start and end dates, a row for each day with date, start time, end time, break time, and total hours for that day, a total hours for the period, and signature + date fields for employee and supervisor. This template includes all of these.

Is this timesheet template really free?

Yes, completely free. Fill in your details, click Download, and the PDF is generated in your browser and saved to your device. No account, no email, no credit card, no watermark on the downloaded PDF.

What's the difference between weekly, biweekly, and semi-monthly?

Weekly: 7 days (one workweek). Biweekly: 14 days (two workweeks) — the most common US pay schedule. Semi-monthly: roughly half a month (e.g., 1st–15th and 16th–last day) — this can span two workweeks, but FLSA overtime is still calculated per workweek, not per pay period.

How long must employers keep timesheets?

FLSA (29 CFR § 516) requires employers to keep payroll records, including timesheets, for at least 2 years. California requires 3 years. Employees should also keep personal copies for the same period in case of wage disputes.

Does my employer have to provide a timesheet form?

FLSA requires employers to keep records of hours worked but doesn't specify the format — paper, digital, punch card, or app-based all qualify. The responsibility for accurate recordkeeping is on the employer, but employees benefit from keeping their own records too.

What's the difference between this tool and the app?

This tool is for creating timesheets manually. The Work Hours Time Tracker app tracks your hours automatically — tap start when you begin work, tap stop when you're done. At the end of each pay period, the app generates a complete timesheet PDF automatically, no data entry needed.
