Frequently Asked Questions
How is overtime calculated on this timesheet?
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), overtime is any time worked over 40 hours in a workweek, paid at least 1.5× your regular hourly rate. This calculator adds up your daily hours and automatically separates the first 40 (regular) from any hours above 40 (overtime). Enter your hourly rate in the form to see estimated pay for both.
Is this timesheet FLSA-compliant?
Yes. The PDF includes employee name, employer, the full week of dates, start and end times for each day, break time, calculated hours, and signature fields for both employee and supervisor. The FLSA (29 CFR § 516) requires employers to keep timesheet records for at least 2 years — some states require 3 years.
Does California have different overtime rules?
Yes. California employees also earn overtime for hours worked over 8 in a single day (1.5×) and double time for hours over 12 in a single day (2×). This calculator applies federal FLSA rules (weekly overtime only). For California-specific calculations, use our overtime calculator with the California toggle.
What is a workweek under FLSA?
A workweek is any fixed, regularly recurring period of 168 hours — 7 consecutive 24-hour periods. Your employer sets the workweek start day (it doesn't have to be Monday). Overtime is calculated per workweek, not per day (unless you're in California or a state with daily overtime laws).
Do I need to sign up or create an account?
No. Enter your hours, click Download, and the PDF is saved directly to your device. No email address, no account, no data leaves your browser. This tool works entirely offline after the page loads.
How long must employers keep timesheet records?
Under FLSA, employers must retain payroll records — including timesheets — for at least 2 years. California requires 3 years. As an employee, it's good practice to keep your own copies as well. The PDF this tool generates is suitable for both employee and employer recordkeeping.
Can I use this for biweekly or semi-monthly pay periods?
This tool calculates one week at a time (7 days), which matches the FLSA definition of a workweek. For a biweekly pay period, fill it in twice — once for each week. Overtime is still calculated per week, not across the two-week period, as required by FLSA.
What's the difference between this tool and the app?
This tool is great for one-off use. The Work Hours Time Tracker app tracks your time automatically — tap start when you begin work, tap stop when you're done. At the end of each pay period, the app generates a complete, signed-ready PDF with all your hours and overtime — no manual entry needed.
Track automatically — no more filling timesheets by hand
